Another mock trophy Carl
once framed was a pair of broken oars. Described as
"unbreakable" when they were sold; the oars failed to live up
to the promise on a whitewater rafting expedition. The
"unbreakable" oars died, but the customers survived, and felt
proud enough to frame them.
Carl receives quite a bit
of business from the frequenters of a renowned local golf course,
Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this past year's PGA tournament. Carl is
the club's unofficial framer, specializing in a hole-in-one memorial for
the lucky few who can claim such a feat. In the frame, Carl includes a
photo of the hole; a scorecard; and the ball, which is placed to look as
if it is in a cup. It's a beautiful design and good business, too bad it
happens so rarely!
Recently Carl framed a
large uncut sheet of baseball cards from the 1920s, which included
several cards of the Sultan of Swat himself, Babe Ruth. The valuable
collection spurred Carl to put in extra effort to complete the job
quickly - getting the cards out of his shop before an unlucky accident
cost him a fortune. Despite the rush, the job came out wonderfully.
In addition to framing,
Breitenstein's Frame Shoppe offers quality prints and artwork, which
helps it stand out from the 65 other retail frame stores in the
metropolitan Louisville area, and the estimated 400-500 "basement
framers." Carl expressed a thank you to Larson-Juhl for quality
products and great support they've given his small business.
